Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding Executive Coaching
What is executive coaching, and how does it differ from mentoring or therapy?
The focus is on the work environment, although we live an integrated life and therefore family and faith discussions usually become part of the coaching sessions. The degree of those conversations is up to you.
Who typically benefits from executive coaching—CEOs, mid-level managers, or entrepreneurs?
All of the above. There are similar needs at all levels and there are different needs at each level. I have personal experience at all three levels as well as coaching at all three levels.
What specific outcomes can I expect from working with an executive coach?
An increase in clarity about where you are going, how you are going to get there and how you are doing along the way.
How is executive coaching different from business consulting?
Coaching is focused on an individual and happens repeatedly over a period of time (monthly or more often). Consulting is focused on a business need and usually involves multiple employees or tool implementations. See the home page for examples of consulting engagements.
Is coaching focused on personal development, professional growth, or both?
Both, professional development starts with personal development.
How do I know if I’m ready for coaching?
To use a Patrick Lencioni phrase, are you humble, hungry and smart? If you are missing one of these attributes are you willing to pursue them?
Coaching Process & Methodology
What does a typical coaching engagement look like?
One on one for at least 1 hour, up to 2 hours, in person or via video conferencing. Monthly at a minimum, possibly as often as weekly, depending on needs.
How long does a coaching relationship usually last?
As long as the client is receiving values. My previous client relationships have lasted years.
What coaching methodologies or frameworks do you use?
A series of check ins, always starting with whatever is top of mind for you. See the Coaching Sessions description.
How is progress measured throughout the coaching process?
Are we continuing to talk about the same things over and over? Is there no difference in business outcomes?
What tools or assessments are used during coaching?
I can use various personality profiles and assessments as needed.
How do you ensure confidentiality in coaching sessions?
No information is shared with anyone other than those you give me permission for.
Choosing the Right Coach
What qualifications or certifications should I look for in an executive coach?
Experience in coaching, experience in business, a track record of satisfied clients. An excellent listener (the right advice starts with understanding the current situation). I have that experience and the listening skills.
How do I determine if a coach is the right fit for me?
Set up a free discovery call or meeting.
Can I speak with previous clients or see testimonials?
Yes, I have testimonials on my home page and they are willing to talk to prospective clients.
Do you offer a complimentary initial consultation or discovery session?
Yes, in person or via video conference for up to 1 hour.
What industries or sectors do you specialize in?
I don’t specialize in any industry or sector, but I prefer working with entrepreneurs or small business owners and help them grow.
How do you handle situations where the coaching relationship isn't working?
We mutually agree to end the relationship. I won’t force someone to work with me if they aren’t receiving value.
Organizational Coaching & ROI
How can executive coaching benefit my organization as a whole?
Better leaders lead to better results.
What is the return on investment (ROI) for executive coaching?
You should see business growth in revenues and profits after a period of time. The other ROI is more time for yourself as you become a better delegator.
Can coaching help improve team dynamics and leadership effectiveness?
Yes, I can usually help improve communication and clarity which leads to better results.
Do you offer group coaching or workshops in addition to one-on-one sessions?
I don’t do peer groups, but I can coach groups of your leaders within your business.
How do you align coaching goals with organizational objectives?
That’s part of the process each month. If there isn’t a business plan I can help facilitate that as a consulting engagement.
